Printmaking: Monotype

Yellow Barn Studio, Glen Echo

Tuesdays 1-3:30

Spirits of the Lake, monotype diptych

Spirits of the Lake, monotype diptych

Enjoy the expressiveness and versatility of waterbased monotype and drypoint printmaking. Monotypes are one-of-a-kind prints made by adding or removing ink from a plate which is then printed using a printing press. Additional layers can be created by adding other elements to the plate and passing it through the press one or more times, resulting in rich, multi-faceted images. Drypoint is an intaglio printmaking method that involves scratching an image into a plate with a pointed tool. These lines create a burr that holds ink and results in a unique line quality. Drypoint is a great method for taking your drawings into print. We will be using water-based Akua inks, brush, stencils, printmaking tools and a variety of papers to create dynamic prints using the printing press. All levels welcome.  Materials fee of $15 payable to the instructor covers inks, modifiers, printmaking paper, tools for use in class. More info:; Minimum age 16.

Students at Glen Echo learning iPad sketching

Students at Glen Echo learning iPad sketching

The iPad is a wonderful tool for sketching ideas or creating digital art on the go. This very thorough class will work with a variety of source material. Students will learn to: work with layers; capture textures photographically on your iPad and then use them as backgrounds for painting; choose and modify colors and tools, save, share, and organize your artworks. This is a hands-on class. You'll need to bring a fully charged iPad. Though you can use your finger to draw on the iPad, painting with a stylus, particularly a pressure-sensitive one, gives you more control over your brush strokes than using a finger and you may also find it more comfortable. We will use Adobe Photoshop Sketch, a better program for beginners. At the end of the workshop I will give a brief overview of Procreate, a more advanced app, so you have the option of leveling up on your own. All levels welcome. A basic comfort level with an iPad is preferred, because it will be easier for you to jump into the program. More info: Minimum age 13.

This workshop will provide new techniques and excitement for watercolorists and printmakers of all levels. Materials required: watercolors/watercolor crayons or pencils. Yupo, a synthetic paper that can be found at Dick Blick or Plazaart.  Minimum age 14.
