Night at the Museum – Now Be Here #4
I was very excited to be part of "Now Be Here #4" a historic gathering of almost 500 female and female-identifying artists from the Washington DC area. The purpose of the photo was to draw attention to the area's vibrant art scene and recognize those who sometimes feel invisible in the arts community at large.
Wednesday evening, October 25, we gathered in the main ballroom of the National Museum of Women and the Arts. There was a bit of standing around while the photographer arranged the shot, but we got to talk to friends, colleagues, people we knew and people whom we only recognized.
As I looked over the crowd from the balcony afterwards, one of my friends commented, "I haven't felt this good since the Women's March!" It was similar in tone, albeit a bit smaller. And although 465 participated, I couldn't help notice all the absent female artists I knew who couldn't be there--maybe next year we can photograph it on the Mall--then we will get some real numbers!
Previous gatherings occurred in L.A., New York and Miami last year. Artist Kim Schoenstadt conceived the project in collaboration with DC's Linn Meyers and photographer Kim Johnson.
